What is servant leadership? Is it a philosophy, or a theory, or a set of values, or a list of characteristics, or a series of practices—or some combination of all of these things? Professor Stephen Prosser addresses these questions in the context of the literature and research on servant leadership in the new essay Servant Leadership: More Philosophy, Less Theory. After reviewing the ways in which people try to describe and explain leadership, he provides six reasons why servant leadership is a philosophy, not a theory, concerning service and the practice of leadership. The essay is concise, and designed for the practitioner. To buy copies of the essay, click here.

Greenleaf Center Conferences
The Greenleaf Center furthers the understanding, awareness and practice of servant leadership through a variety of conferences. The Annual Conference is an international conference. It provides an opportunity for those new to servant leadership and those who have been on the journey a while to hear from a variety of inspiring and experienced servant-leaders from all over the world. General sessions, workshops and service opportunities allow for a range of learning experiences.
The Leadership Institute for Educators is a conference for faculty and staff at universities who are teaching and applying servant leadership principles, as well as those who are interested in learning how they might do the same. It is an opportunity for faculty and staff to learn from each other, sharing information about their programs, their issues, and their progress as they move forward on their servant leadership journeys.
The Healthcare Conference is for those involved in the healthcare industry. The Greenleaf Center will host its first Healthcare Conference in 2010.
Regional Conferences are one day events with the idea of having the annual conference experience at a local level. If you are interested in having a regional conference in your area, please contact the Greenleaf Center by calling 317.669.8050 or conference@greenleaf.org.
